Akuapem North MCE Hot, Faces Massive Demo over Creation of One-Way Traffic in Akropong 

The creation of the unidirectional traffic streets according to the Akuapem North Municipal Chief Executive,(MCE) William Barima Asiedu Larbi is to reduce vehicular traffic in the township particularly during weekends which records high vehicular traffic.

The Akuapem North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) William Barima Asiedu Larbi has incurred the wrath of chiefs, Assembly Members, and residents in Akropong-Akuapem the Municipal capital and Traditional Heads of Okuapeman for an attempt to create one-way traffic streets without proper consultation.

The creation of the unidirectional traffic streets according to the MCE is to reduce vehicular traffic in the township particularly during weekends which records high vehicular traffic.

The Assembly has created a by-pass for motorists exiting the town to use as part of the implementation.

The decision taken without broader consultation has led to agitation and outrage by some chiefs, shop owners, residents, drivers, private car owners, and Assembly members.

According to them, the one-way road traffic will create inconvenience to commuters, residents, and shop owners who offload goods from trucks among others.

Some Assembly members who oppose the decision have expressed their displeasure and petitioned the Assembly to rescind their decision.

Notwithstanding, some youth in Akropong is bracing up for a massive demonstration against the MCE if the decision is not reversed.

The MCE invited Bryt FM Journalists to his office for clarification however failed to show up after the Journalists waited for four hours on Friday.

But it is alleged that he eventually switched off his mobile phone.

The Municipal Coordinating Director who was worried tried to give an explanation that, the One-way traffic road was created on the advice of the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC) to reduce traffic.

He said the decision is being piloted assuring that it will be reviewed if genuine challenges are identified.

On the other hand, the Presiding Member, Hon Asiedu Offei, who is alleged to oppose the one-way road traffic project also declined to speak to the media stating that it is being handled diplomatically.
