The Grammy-winning Nigerian musician Damini Ogulu, better known by his stage name Burna Boy, claims that the afrobeats genre lacks meaningful lyrics and is instead "just a great time."

'Afrobeats has no substance, it’s just vibes’ – Burna Boy

He says the genre is "literally nothing."

This was said by the self-styled "African Giant" in an interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe that took place recently in New York.

He claimed that 90% of them lack actual life experiences, which is why the majority of Nigerian music, or African music, or afrobeats as it is sometimes called, is essentially about nothing.

"There is nothing substantive in it; nobody is discussing anything. Simply put, it's a good time. It's a fantastic time. However, life is not a fantastic experience overall.

You will still have to deal with life, no matter how wonderful a time you are having now, have had in the past, or hope to have. Therefore, in my opinion, the artist's essence should be their music.

A person's good days, poor days, best days, and worst days all happen to artists. I'm ending a project that was supposed to give fans a glimpse into those events.

Recall that Burna Boy has reiterated that his genre of music is not afrobeats but afrofusion which he said is a fusion of afrobeat, hip-hop, reggae, R&B, and dancehall.
