GPRTU justifies 20%

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says its decision to increase lorry fares by 20% is justified.

GPRTU increased fares on the 7th following what it says was a laid down agreement between the government to increase fares when the fuel margins increase beyond 10%.

Speaking at a news conference today, the president of the GPRTU

Nana Nimako Bresiamah in justifying the decision however says they have been considerate in the upward margin adding that the current economic hardship only calls for cost bearing.

He also indicated that they are open to negotiations if called by the government

Meanwhile, the division within Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) seems endless.

While General Secretary of the Council, Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah stated that the increases are illegal pending a scheduled meeting with transport minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah its vice president Alhaji Muhammed Tanko says the decision by the GPRTU stands adding the Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah is not a spokesperson for the minister.
