Zimbabwe pardons over 4,000 prisoners to decongest jails

A presidential amnesty decision intended to relieve pressure on the nation's overcrowded jails has resulted in the release of approximately a fifth of all convicts in Zimbabwe.

 In what it called a wonderful act, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) said that more than 4,000 prisoners, the majority of whom were men, were released.

Excluded from the program were violent offenders as well as those found guilty of robbery, treason, and public order infractions.

In Zimbabwe, there is a severe prison overpopulation problem.

Prior to the general elections in August, the action was taken.

Emmerson Mnangagwa, the president, is struggling with a high cost of living crisis, high inflation, and power outages.
