The largest municipality in The Gambia, Kanifing, is where Mr. Bensouda is seeking reelection.

In advance of the nation's mayoral and regional elections on Saturday, political tensions have risen.

The Gambians were outraged by the soldiers' actions and denounced their conduct.

The army issued a statement on Thursday saying it was looking into the involved soldiers' conduct but described them as an isolated event.

"We want to reassure the public that anyone found to be lacking will face appropriate punishment. We apologize for any trouble that this tragic event may have caused in the interim," the army added.

Under the United Democratic Party (UDP), the first political home of President Adama Barrow, Mr. Bensouda was elected to government in 2018.

However, President Barrow split from the UDP subsequently and started his own National People's Party.

Mr. Bensouda is expected to be the major opponent in the 2026 presidential race, according to several commentators today.
