ICC war crimes charges are denied by Malian Islamists.

Lawyers for Al-Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz, a Malian Islamist accused of being the police chief in Timbuktu in 2012, told judges at the International Criminal Court that he was the "wrong man."

Mr. Abdoul Aziz's defense attorney, Melinda Taylor, stated, "He should not be convicted because he happened to be in the wrong location at the wrong time, with the incorrect race."

When al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansar Eddine gained control of Timbuktu in 2012, prosecutors claim Mr. Abdoul Aziz terrorized the city's citizens. He has been charged with crimes against humanity as well as sexual enslavement.
