The experienced Lecturer and Dean of the Faculty of Integrated Communication Science at University of Media Art and Communication, Prof. Modestus Fosu, has warned Ghanaians to stop their continuous habit of destroying the natural environment through the activities of illegal mining, indiscriminate cutting of trees, bush and waste material burnings.
 
He stressed that "if we sit unconcerned for the miscreants to destroy our natural environment, it means that we have already killed ourselves in Ghana."
 
He noted that before human beings could survived through the good health generally depends on the natural environment, saying that " the country's natural environment is made of forest, mineral resource, water, food and air.
According to Prof. Fosu, he observed with grave concern that the negative human activities have been completely destroying the country's natural environment, puting the spices, animals and human beings in danger.
Prof. Fosu speaking in an interview with Soireenews.com on the sideline at the maiden Biennial Forum on Natural Resources, Environment, Climate Change and Science (BIM-NECS FORUM) held in Accra on Monday June 12, 2023.
The forum which was held under the theme; "Strengthening Media Focus On Natural Resources, Environment, Climate And Science: Challenges, Prospect And Way forward," brought together journalists from prints, online outlets, radios and televisions media houses in Accra.
 
Otganiseed by the Media Platform On Environment And Climate Change (MPEC),  Afro-Sino Centre of International Relations (ASCIR), the forum served as a platform to train select journalists on natural resources, environment, climate and science and urged the journalists to report more on climate change and environmental impact issues to increase awareness to facilitate climate actions.
The journalists were encouraged to monitor the implementation of climate change and environmental impact related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) issues in the country.
 
They have also been urged to protect the privacy and dignity of individuals they report on to avoid victimising them.
Prof. Fosu maintained that they decided to engage the journalists to encourage them to intensify public education on the negative effective of environmental impact issues which are climate change, pollution, environmental degradation, and resource depletion, stressing that we need to change our negative attitude against environment.
According to Prof.Fosu, the journalists have the continuous roles to play to ensure that everybody should shun away from the negative activities which were dangerous to the environment.
'When the country loses it continuous fight against the environmental sustainability then it means that we are killing ourselves, so it is now the time for the journalists rise up to help the nation to stage a massive crusade to educate the general public to protect our natural environment well from destruction illegal miners," Prof. Fosu advised.
"I am urging the media practitioners to continue to intensify the public education to tell Ghanaians public that the negative effects of the human activities of illegal miners were killing our natural mineral and forest resources," he noted.
Prof. Fosu kicked against the continuous habit of indiscriminate burning of bush and waste materials in the public places, saying that this is one of the major factors which caused the country natural environment.
"Those who are found of indiscriminate cutting of the trees from our forest range reserves and open places to be asked to stop that habit now because that practices is a very dangerous to the environment," he further warned Ghanaians.
"The people who are destroying our environment through illegal mining activities, cutting of trees and burning of waste materials should be warned to stop because these practices it would go along way to affect the unborn children in the years of 2030 and 2050," he emphasized.
"I am saying if these practices have not stopped, it would go along way to affect the country's future youth in way that they would not get conducive environment to grow," Prof. Fosu added.
