Andy Robertson has admitted that 2-0 against Aston Villa on Sunday, July 5 2020 at Anfield was a fair result for the Reds irrespective of the visitor's position on the league table.

Dean Smith's side held a resilient Liverpool until Sadio Mane and Curtis Jones late goals sunk the visitors who are fighting relegation and have two points from their last five matches.

The former Hull City left-back says playing against a team ‘fighting for their lives’ is one of the toughest yet been able to put it all together in the dying minutes is well deserving.

“It might not have been the best performance in the first half but you are playing against a team that is fighting for their lives and relegation and I know how that feels,” he said.

“When you do that you need to match their fight and you need to match their endeavor and we did that, and it took a bit of time for any sort of quality to shine through in that game. But, once it did then we were the ones doing it and we managed to capitalize on that. [We] took our chances and 2-0, I think, was a fair result.

The Reds were crowned as Premier League Champions on Thursday, June 25, 2020, but lost heavily the following week to former Champions, Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad.

Klopp’s men had decent chances but were not clinical enough on the night as the Citizens took over the game earlier.

According to Robertson, Liverpool's inability to take advantage of the opportunities was one factor, which gave City the edge to fight harder, having nothing to lose.

“Look, Thursday was a frustrating performance. We weren’t happy with certain areas of our game. It was a strange one.

“I think over the last five or six games we’ve played against Manchester City that might have been the most chances we created against them, and in the first 25 minutes, we could easily have went one or 2-0 up. Obviously when you don’t take your chances we are playing against a team that has got nothing really to lose and they went out and took their chances which we didn’t.

“In certain areas, we could have done a lot better, of course, we could have, but it was important not to overreact. We are champions in our own right, and that game made us 20 points clear of that team so that shows you how well we have done this season.”

Robertson sustained a knock in the latter stages of Sunday’s 2-0 victory but has made known that he will be fit for the next game at the Amex to play Brighton and Hove Albion.
