Virgil van Dijk will undergo knee surgery after sustaining injury during the Merseyside derby, the club confirmed on Sunday.

The centre back went through tough times in the early minutes of the game after a rash challenge by Jordan Pickford to end the Dutchman’s minutes on the field when Sadio Mane had already given Liverpool the lead.

“No specific timescale is being placed upon his return to action at this stage,” the club confirmed.

“Following surgery, Van Dijk will begin a rehabilitation programme with the club’s medical team to enable him to reach full fitness as soon as possible,” it added.

Joe Gomez was called to partner with Matip in a game which ended 2-2, witnessing series of rough tackles with another launched on Thiago which led to Richarlison's red card.

Henderson scored a late equaliser but was controversially ruled offside by VAR accusing Mane to be in an offside position.

Quizzed about the extent of the defender’s injury after the game, Klopp said, “I don’t know. It’s not good.

“Virgil played I don’t know how many games in a row, he plays with pain, he plays with pretty much everything.

“But he couldn’t play on. That’s not good.”
