UDS to school Government Agencies on Environmental management

The Nyakpala Campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) in the Tolon District of the Northern Region intends to train staff from some selected government Agencies on good environmental management practices.

Notable the Agencies include the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), and the Forestry Commission (FC) among others.

Professor Abdul-Ganiyu Shaibu, of the School of Engineering of the University at a meeting in Bolgatanga with the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu said the training program would not be a lecture hall activity, but a forum to share experiences.

He said the training would provide in-depth knowledge in watershed management for sustainable Agriculture practices, noting that people indulged in some forms of indiscriminate environmental activities including farming close to water bodies, felling of trees among others.

The effects of such negative environmental practices, the Professor noted had a great toll on the health of the citizenry, “This short course will help us to be able to strategically manage our water resources, land, environment, and good agricultural practices to help increase our farm yields,” he added.

Hon. Yakubu said the initiative by the UDS was a timely intervention to save the environment from practices that negatively affected and degraded the environment.

He pledged the support of his office to the training program and gave the assurance that the Regional Coordinating Council would enroll all 15 Municipal and District Assemblies in the Region in the training program to provide the needed assistance and find practical solutions to protect the environment.
