Tunisia racism row: Burkinabè repatriates 64 nationals

Following President Kais Saied's comments against refugees from sub-Saharan Africa a few weeks ago, dozens of Burkinabes living in Tunisia have been sent home.

According to Mr. Saied, the migrants were targets of racist abuse and violence because they were involved in a plot to alter the demographic makeup of the nation.

A government-chartered aircraft carrying 64 people touched down in Burkina Faso's capital on Wednesday.

They were greeted by sympathetic family members and some government representatives.

According to Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traore, it is the duty of the government "to watch out for the security and well-being of its citizens," as reported by the AFP news agency.

He stated that other groups would return via different arrangements and that this was the first contingent of people to appear.
