Southern Africa bloc extends troops' mandate in Mozambique

To continue the war against Islamist extremists, nations from the Sadc regional grouping in southern Africa have decided to extend the mission's mandate in Mozambique by one month.

Jihadists have increased their attacks in the nation's north.

Since the violence started five years ago, more than 800,000 people have been ejected from their homes.

The Islamic State group's fighters have a stronghold in the province of Cabo Delgado.

Attacks have now reached the provinces of Niassa and Nampula, where authorities are worried about young people being drawn in by the jihadists.

Hundreds of soldiers have also been dispatched from Rwanda to aid the Mozambican military.
