Ibrahim Traoré, the head of Burkina Faso's military, visited front-line soldiers in the northern town of Djibo, where an Islamist militant attack on a military camp occurred two weeks ago.

For months, armed militants have been attacking the town of around 300,000 people. Following a protracted drought, food is becoming increasingly scarce.

According to a statement made by the presidency on Monday, Captain Traoré visited the soldiers on Saturday to bolster and inspire them.

According to the statement, he admitted that certain dysfunctions needed to be fixed for the northern front to operate more effectively.

He assured them that many of them would be permitted to return home and said that additional knowledge and assistance will be made accessible.

The 24 October attack on a military camp in the town, one of the worst on the armed forces since Mr. Traoré took control in a coup, left at least 10 troops dead and more than 50 others injured.

27 troops lost their lives earlier in September while guarding a supply convoy traveling to Djibo town in Gaskindé.

After accusing Lt Col Paul-Henri Damiba of breaking his vow to put an end to the Islamist conflict that has plagued Burkina Faso since 2015, Captain Traoré overthrew him on September 30.
