The people of Sibi find it difficult to adhere to Covid-19 protocols due to the inaccessibility of water.

Sibi, a farming community in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region are leaving without water for the past three (3) months.

The Community with a population of over Eight Thousand, walk for one and a half miles to Kpassa the District capital to search for water whilst others walk to Damanko to get water from the Oti River.

According to them, the covid-19 protocol of washing hands has not been observed due to the situation and Veronica baskets distributed by the Assembly and other stakeholders have been empty for months.


"The most affected ones are Pregnant women, kids and students. Last week one was bitten by a snake whilst a pregnant woman delivered on their way to search for water.

"Some private schools need to be closed down because students and teachers can not get water to bathe to report to school on time. The Government Schools have also changed their usual reporting and closing time for schools as well to enable the Students to search for water," inhabitants said.

Speaking to the District Chief Executive Officer, Honourable Jackie Jackson said the situation at Sibi is what they face even before they were born and during his time as the District Chief Executive, the assembly has drilled numerous boreholes but the land has no water to be mechanized.

He added, the Assembly is working with other alternatives to get the People of Sibi water.

Meanwhile, in 2004 - 2008 the then Late Vice President  Alhaji Aliu Mahama has cut sod for the construction of Kpassa - Damanko Water Project which supply resident in the District water during dry seasons and has been commissioned.

For about years now the pipelines have broken down, ever since the people leaving in Sibi have been hunting for water during dry seasons including the capital Kpassa.

The Member of Parliament( MP) Hon John Kwabena Bless who prior to the election has to find Technical means to supply them with water has become fed up when the situation became worse.
