AS Roma has confirmed Jose Mourinho as their coach for next season following the sack of Paulo Fonseca earlier on Tuesday.

This means Mourinho, dismissed by Daniel Levy for less than a month has acquired a new Italian job.

The 58-year old has signed a 3-year contract with the Giallorossi ahead of the 2021-2022 season.

In a statement, Jose Mourinho thanked the Friedkin family for choosing him to lead the great club of Rome and also become part of their vision.

“After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years," he said.

"The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season. In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course.”

Having been sacked by Hotspurs, Mourinho was unemployed for a very long time. During his time as Manager in FC Porto and Inter-Milan, he was able to win the Champions League for Porto and Inter in 2004 and 2010 respectively.

The return of Jose Mourinho in the Italian League will be his second spell in the Italian Serie A having taken charge of Inter-Milan who he guided to a historic treble including the 2010 Champions League title.

The trophy drought on the Tiber has been ongoing since 2008 with Mourinho the eleventh head coach to take charge since their last Coppa Italia win under Luciano Spaletti.
