Over 350 were injured in Senegal clashes - Red Cross

After opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was given a two-year prison sentence on Thursday, violence erupted, according to the Red Cross in Senegal, injuring about 360 persons.

In the battles between protesters and security personnel in Mr. Sonko's hometown of Zinguinchor and the capital city of Dakar, at least 16 fatalities are reported to have occurred.

Supporters of Mr. Sonko claim that the accusations against him of "corrupting" a young woman were made for political purposes.

The "murderous repression" of the security forces was denounced by them.

On Sunday, everything seemed to be in order.

On June 1, 2023, a riot police officer uses tear gas to disperse protesters at the Cheikh Anta Diop University campus in Dakar, Senegal.

On Thursday, nine people lost their lives in fighting in Senegal as a result of riots that broke out after opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was sentenced.

On live national television, Interior Minister Antoine Diome stated, "We have noted with regret violence that has led to the destruction of public and private property and, unfortunately, nine deaths in Dakar and Ziguinchor."

Sonko was declared not guilty of the rape accusation but was given a two-year prison term for corrupting minors on Thursday. As a result, Sonko is currently ineligible to run for president in the upcoming election.
