Kenya election: Little activity at some polling centres in Nairobi

There is minimal movement at a polling place in Nairobi's Milimani Primary School on the eve of Kenya's eagerly anticipated election.

On the ground were pieces of the voter registration list that had been posted on the main gate so that people could check their eligibility.

The school security guard said, "No one tore them; it's strong winds," and he promptly proposed better options than the paper-sticking tape that should have been used.

The only other persons two ladies identified themselves as poll workers and explained that they were there since the election commission had not contacted them.

We were hoping to see them here, one said. "We were trained over the weekend, and I'm supposed to be a clerk at this center tomorrow, but I don't know what's going on."

Similar circumstances existed nearby at Kilimani Primary School, but there were no police officers or employees of the electoral commission there.

The school security guy informed me that the materials were coming because I was "early."

He announced, without prompting, "I'll be the first one to vote tomorrow," and when he saw that I didn't believe him, he pointed to his home inside the school's grounds.
