Forces must leave Sudan capital for truce to hold - army

Malik Agar, the deputy head of Sudan's ruling council, has welcomed talks for a new cease-fire but stressed that no peace can last until all forces have left the city.

Forces must leave Sudan capital for truce to hold - army

Since the talks in Saudi Arabia collapsed last week, there has been an alarming rise in violence in Khartoum and the western Darfur region.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a rival paramilitary group, and the army both blamed the other of breaking the cease-fire, but mediators stayed in Jeddah.

According to Mr. Agar, the talks there had the best chance of putting an end to the violence.

Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the chief of the Sudanese military, recently replaced Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, popularly known as Hemedti, who commands the RSF, with Mr. Agar, a former rebel leader.

RSF fighters make up the majority of the forces in Khartoum, and it looks that the army is once again trying to blow them out of their current positions.
