Nigerian singer sorry over offensive tweets

Brymo, a singer from Nigeria, has apologized for his insulting remarks towards the Igbo ethnic community there.

Brymo, whose real name is Olawale Ashimi, had liked a tweet that called the Igbos, one of Nigeria's largest ethnic groups and natives of the country's southeast, "cowards."

In another post, he used an offensive expletive to refer to Igbo people, which infuriated some people. He also called electing an Igbo president "a pipe dream" in another post.

Many young Nigerians are enthusiastically supporting Peter Obi, an Igbo candidate, in the upcoming presidential election.

Tens of thousands of people have signed a petition on Change.org to prevent the artist from being named as a nominee for songwriter of the year at this weekend's All Africa Music Award (Afrima).

Brymo's statements sparked outrage online, with others labeling them "racist" and "xenophobic."

Brymo, a member of the Yoruba ethnic group, has announced to the Nigerian media that he will be voting for another Yoruba man, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the upcoming elections.
