Nigeria to penalise BBC for bandit warlords documentary

According to the Nigerian government, the BBC would be punished for a documentary about the alleged bandit warlords of Zamfara produced by its investigative show Africa Eye.

The documentary, according to the nation's information minister, praises the terrorists' deeds, who have terrorized locals in northwestern Nigeria for years.

The National Broadcasting Commission of the nation will decide on the fines for BBC, according to Lai Mohammad, even though the organization does not oversee foreign media organizations.

The BBC has been informed by the commission's director of public affairs that if the corporation and a nearby daily, Daily Trust, are found to have violated the journalism code of conduct, consequences would be communicated to them.

The BBC stated in a statement that Africa Eye frequently covers contentious and difficult topics. Additionally, it stated that its journalism is unwavering and that the story was overwhelmingly in the public interest.

The previous three days have seen a lot of conversation about the documentary in Nigeria. People in this country have questioned the government's attempts to rein in the country's escalating levels of insecurity, particularly in the north, where terrorist organizations are active.

The Zamfara governor issued a shoot-to-kill order against anyone seen riding a motorcycle last month and urged locals to arm themselves against extremists.

The governor defended his decision by saying it will improve security.
