Kenyan nurse combating FGM named best in the world

A Kenyan nurse has been named the winner of the first-ever global nursing award, worth $250,000 (£205,000).

Anna Qabale Duba, a physician at the Marsabit County Referral Hospital in northern Kenya, was recognized for her commitment to ending harmful cultural practices such as female genital mutilation in her community.

Ms. Duba has also established the Qabale Duba Foundation, which aims to empower young girls.

"Through my organization, I have constructed a one-of-a-kind school in my town that teaches both children and their parents," Ms. Duba said in her address.

Over 24,000 nurses from 184 countries applied for the position.

In Dubai, she was honored at a ceremony commemorating International Nurses Day.
