In an ongoing operation to bring calm to Kenya's northern Marsabit county, at least 200 guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition have been recovered, according to the interior ministry.

According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, there are more than 5,000 illicit guns in the community.

A mop-up operation to take illegal firearms from the public has been carried out by a joint security team.

Officials claim that some of the weapons were handed over to them.

A dusk-to-dawn curfew in the area has also been extended for another 30 days by the administration. For the past two months, the county has been under curfew.

Ethnic violence has claimed numerous lives in the northern county, and a recent upsurge in conflicts has been blamed on political incitement as the campaign for the August general election heats up.

In recent months, the region has also been hit by a severe drought.

The drought has put pressure on common resources like water and pastures, putting households in danger of going hungry.
