Nigeria TikTok stars investigated by morality police

Ten artists who are well-known on the TikTok social media platform have been ordered to be probed for allegedly distorting public morality by an Islamic court in the northern Nigerian state of Kano.

According to Baba Jibo Ibrahim, a spokesman for the judiciary in Kano state, the musicians were ordered to be investigated after a group of attorneys complained that they were using profanity in their songs.

According to the authorities, the musicians might face legal action if police investigations turned up enough proof.

The artists, who are well-liked by young people in northern Nigeria, especially on TikTok, have not yet made any public statements regarding the accusations.

Some of them work as actors in the thriving Kannywood Hausa-language film business.

One of the about a dozen northern Nigerian states where Sharia, or Islamic law, is practiced alongside the nation's secular laws is Kano.
