The day commemorates the anniversary  of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

NATIONAL Democratic Congress (NDC) 
Member of Parliament (MP) for Yilo Krobo Constituency of the Eastern Region, Honourable, Albert Tetteh Nyakotey has presented awards to the hardworking teachers of the various educational institutions in the Yilo Krobo constituency.

5th October every year is set aside to mark World Teachers Day.
The day commemorates the anniversary 
of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

This day is not only meant to celebrate how teachers are transforming education but also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.  

A ceremony is held annually in Ghana on  this day to celebrate all teachers and education workers.
In Yilo Krobo, the Municipal Directorate of Education in collaboration with the Member of Parliament, Honourable Albert Nyakotey, organized a colourful ceremony to celebrate teachers and education workers in the constituency at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development.

The programme was under the theme:"THE TEACHER WE NEED FOR THE EDUCATION WE WANT- THE GLOBAL IMPERATIVE TO REVERSE THE TEACHER SHORTAGE."
The occasion was also used to award  teachers and staff of the Municipal Education Office whose hard work has been recognized by the Directorate. 

In all, 41 deserving teachers in different categories were awarded for their hard work and dedication to the service within the year under review.
The prize items which were fully sponsored by the Hon Albert Nyakotey includes, Double door fridges, Table top fridges, Television sets, Standing fans, Pressing irons, Gas cookers and many more.
In the end, Madam Augustina Nagai of Wawase R/C JHS was adjudged the overall best teacher for the year 2023.

The MP in his speech acknowledged the invaluable contribution of teachers in nation building.
He used the opportunity to highlight some of his achievements in  education over the two and half years in office as an MP. 
He reiterated his commitment to partner stakeholders to continue to ensure that the standard and quality  of education in the municipality is improved.

Also present at the ceremony were the Municipal Chief Executive, delegation from the Yilo Klo Traditional Council, Vice Chancellor of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, former Staff of the Municipal Directorate and many other dignitaries. 
After the official program, Honourable Nyakotey hosted all teachers at the Somanya Royal Hotel to refresh them and interact with them.
