National service person remanded into police custody for alleged robbery

A-24- year old national service person has been remanded into police custody by the Ashaiman circuit court for alleged robbery.

Lamptey Kwaku Jonas is standing trial for having been accused of robbery contrary to section 149 of criminal offences Act 1960 (Act 29).

Against the prayer for bail by the counsel for accused, the court presided over by His Honour Simon Gaga declined the prayer explaining that it will be premature at this stage of the case to grant the accused bail.

He explained that having listened to what he termed tentalising submission by counsel for the accused and prosecutor opposing it with full force per the facts of the case that the case is under investigation and one of the suspects called Dawa is on the run,the accused is remanded into police custody.

The case has been adjourned to be mentioned on 27/06/23. Prosecuting: Prosecutor ASP Fuseini S. presenting the D/SGT. Kingsley Kwarteng investigative case told the court that the complainant Xiaosen Wang, a Chinese National is the Operational Officer of Empire Cement.

Accused person, Lamptey Kwaku Jonas is a national service person and a resident of Labanon Zone 2, Ashaiman. Suspect Dawa is now at large. D/SGT. Kingsley Kwarteng told the court that on 09/06/23 at about 8:00 pm, the complainant was making call at a section of the road at Community 11, Tema before Ping Kang Chinese Clinic when he was attacked by two men on a motorbike and his iPhone 11 pro max, valued GHS 5,000 was robbed from him.

D/SGT. Kingsley Kwarteng said the complainant quickly reported the matter to the police and investigation was commenced into the case. D/SGT. Kingsley Kwarteng further told the court that on 10/06/2023 at about 12:20 am, Police tracked the complainant's phone to a house at Ashaiman Lebanon Zone 2 where the phone was found ringing in one of the rooms.

He told the court that Police broke into the room and arrested the accused person.

A search conducted in the room led to the retrieval of complainant's phone. Police also retrieved 28 iPhones , 1Motorola phone, 1 Sony Ericsson phone, 2 Itel phones, 1 LG phone, 1 Nokia phone, 2 Samsung iPads, 2 Apple ipads, 1MacBook, 2 HP laptops, 1 Windows ipad, a 32 inch TCL television set, 1 Hauwei router, 110 MTN sim cards, 14 Airtel-Tigo sim cards, 1 Verizon 5G sim card, 1 US cellular sim card, 1 Move Africa sim card, 22 memory cards, 2 pen drives, 2 Vodafone modems, 10 mobile phones chargers and cash sum of GHS 9,140.00 and Holland wax print cloths all valaues not yet known.

D/SGT. Kingsley Kwarteng told the court that during investigations, the accused person admitted the offence and mentioned one Dawa as his accomplice.

D/SGT. Kingsley Kwarteng further said strenuous efforts are underway to get in touch with the other victims whose phones were snatched by the accused person and suspect Dawa. Case still under investigations.
