MP And DCE Get Government Greenlight For Six Central Tongu Communities To Join National Electrification Grid And Boost Local Economy

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Central Tongu Constituency of the Volta Region, Hon. Alexander Roosevelt Hotordze and District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Mr Addison Dodzi Mornyuie are leading efforts to connect six communities in the Central Tongu District to the national electricity grid to boost the local economy and security.

The MP acknowledged that while some rural areas remain unconnected, his lobbying efforts have secured government approval for six specific communities in the first phase of the electrification project: Kpevenu-Tsati, Yevukope, Agbadanu, Sorkope, Avor and Atixoe.

 "We have submitted the names of all rural communities without electricity to the government and put measures in place to connect them to the national grid," the MP hinted.

He revealed that in 2023, the MP and contractors were directed to submit a list of communities needing a 33 kV power line. 

By 2026, he pointed out that they successfully pushed to increase the capacity to 62 kV to ensure the rural electrification project captures communities on a one-village basis.

While approval was given for these six communities first, the MP clarified that this is not a deliberate effort to only benefit a select few. 

According to him, the government simply chose the available communities that met the requirements for this new initial phase.

The MP pointed out that the layout drawings for the six communities are currently in the custody of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and Avorkope is the only exception.

The MP clarified that the Avorkope was temporarily left out of the initial ECG drawings but will be done soon.

He explained that during the site inspection, rising floodwaters blocked the road, preventing officials from safely accessing the area.

Future Outlook

The MP reassured residents that many more rural communities are slated to benefit from the government's rural electrification programme. 

He further urged for calm, emphasizing that the project is being rolled out in phases.

The MP and DCE stated that they are actively lobbying the government to connect all remaining communities to the national power grid, confirming that a comprehensive list of all unserved rural communities has been submitted for action.
