Messi is close to signing a new contract at Barcelona.

Former player and legend of the club, Rivaldo told that the Argentine is about to commit his future at the Camp Nou despite speculations surrounding his future with the club of the decade.

Messi is a free agent after rejecting a contract extension last season with speculations strongly linking Paris Saint Germain and Manchester City as the next destination of the six-time Balon d’Or winner.

The election of Joan Laporta as the Barcelona president is a boost for the 33-year old to renew his stay considering the relationship between them earlier.

Laporta won 12 trophies with the Argentine after a fruitful campaign between 2003 and 2010.

According to Rivaldo, the atmosphere surrounding Lionel Messi since the election of Laporta is different as compared to the former days which is good for Barcelona and the player.

He told with optimism that Messi could stay at the Camp Nou a bit longer than expected.

“Messi looks much more connected and happier since Laporta’s arrival – a president he knows well," he told the Sun.

“For that reason, I’m starting to believe more and more that Messi might reach an agreement with the new board and sign a new contract to stay at the club for a few more years.

“Messi had a confidence boost with the new president election – someone he has a good connection with – raising the chances of him considering to stay for a bit longer.”
