Man sentenced to life in prison for killing his albino sibling

In Malawi, five individuals found guilty of killing a man whose body parts they intended to sell received life sentences coupled with hard labor.

2018 saw the murder of albino Macdonald Masumbuka in Machinga's southern area.

Masumbuka's her was one of those given a life sentence.

Thomas Muhosha, a Catholic priest, was also found guilty by the Malawi high court on Tuesday and was given a lower sentence of 30 years in prison together with four other men.

Judge Dorothy NyaKaunda Kamanga stated that the deceased's betrayal by individuals close to him, the murder's meticulous planning, and the fact that he was mercilessly assassinated in a cemetery were all considerations she took into account while determining the sentence.

When word of Muhosha's involvement in the case initially circulated back in 2018, the Catholic Church in Malawi suspended him from the priesthood.

Attacks against people with albinism have been severe in Malawi over the past ten years due to superstitious notions that albino body parts might be used to create charms that bring money or good fortune.

Official figures show that since 2014, more than 170 individuals with albinism have been killed or seriously injured in similar attacks.
