In Liverpool, a mural of Nelson Mandela was revealed.

A mural depicting Nelson Mandela was unveiled in Liverpool ahead of his family's anticipated visit.

In 1994, the South African leader was awarded the Freedom of the City of Liverpool for his role in abolishing apartheid, and the artwork in Toxteth pays tribute to him.

Mr. Mandela is depicted in profound meditation in this painting by local artist John Culshaw.

The artwork was commissioned by Stephen Nze, an advocate for the organization Mandela8, who hoped it would "inspire people to pause and ponder."

"We chose Nelson Mandela's slogan, 'education is the most potent weapon we have to change the world,' because we want to inspire young people to look around and learn for themselves," he explained.

After the black population campaigned vehemently against apartheid in the 1980s, the city has always maintained close ties to the Mandela family.

The first of two new memorial pieces being produced in the region is a mural on the Kuumba Imani Millennium Centre building on Princes Road.

In July, Dr. Mandela and his granddaughter Tukwini Mandela will dedicate a memorial garden in the city's Princes Park.

It features a lakeside bridge, a pavilion, and inscriptions of Nelson Mandela's quotations.

The family visited the garden site in 2019, however, the project was delayed for two years due to the coronavirus epidemic, which was supposed to be completed in 2020.

The artwork revealed this week, according to Sonia Bassey, chairman of Mandela8, will serve as the start of a planned heritage walk leading to the memorial garden.

"It demonstrates that we are a robust and dynamic community, and thousands of people traveling on this key route into the city center will see it," she said.

"We've already seen a lot of enthusiasm for this project, and it's going to be a big draw."

Mr. Culshaw, who recently completed murals honoring Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and Liverpool footballer Mo Salah, described being a part of the project as "amazing."

"Passers-by have been stopping and talking to me about it nonstop," he claimed.

"It's a hit with everyone, which is terrific."
