Largest rare diamond in 300 years unearthed in Angola

The largest rough pink diamond of its sort believed to have been discovered in the past 300 years has been found by miners in north-east Angola.

The 170-carat stone was given the name The Lulo Rose by the Australian site owner.

It stated that the Angolan official diamond marketing company would sell the gem through an international tender.

The Angolan authorities applauded the discovery at the Lulo alluvial mine.

Minerals Resources Minister Diamantino Azevedo is quoted in a statement as stating, "This record and beautiful pink diamond discovered from Lulo continues to display Angola as a major player in the world arena for diamond mining."

Similar stones have sold for record-breaking prices after being cut and polished.
