Firewood-carrying graduate lauded for mum tribute

A job opportunity has come to an Ethiopian student who carried firewood at graduation to honor his hardworking mother.

Over the weekend, pictures of Ephrem Belete, an Addis Ababa University computer science graduate, paying tribute to his mother went viral in Ethiopia.

After graduating, he gave his mother his cap and gown and carried a pile of firewood to symbolize the years of work she put in to send him to school.

She started crying, which Mr. Ephrem described as "tears of happiness," over something.

"I completed this to honor my mother. I am simply one Ethiopian life among many millions, he told the BBC.

He paid tribute to his mother in a video that was widely circulated and got cheers on social media.

He received a job offer from Ethiopia's Information Network Security Agency on Monday, but he declined it because he will be working with Ethiopia's youth in another capacity.

Advantech Abiebie, the mayor of Addis Ababa, also provided Mr. Ephrem's mother with a job and a two-bedroom home.

Many young Ethiopians who might overlook assisting their family will learn from what Mr. Ephrem did to honor his mother, according to Mr. Ephrem.
