Six Nigerians arrested over same-sex website scam

Six people have been detained by police in the Nassarawa state of central Nigeria on suspicion of running a bogus same-sex dating website.

Before robbing their victims, the suspects allegedly used the website to court them.

The arrests were made in response to a victim's accusation that his nude images had been taken with a threat to post them online if he didn't pay.

In Masaka, a local government territory adjoining the capital Abuja, the occurrence was reported.

According to state police spokeswoman Ramhan Nansel, the suspects—four men and two women—supposedly posted images of potential same-sex partners and invited interested people on pre-scheduled dates using a match-making service.

They would then defraud the victims or forcefully take away their belongings and blackmail them into silence.

The police said the suspects would be charged after investigations have been concluded.

Nigeria criminalizes same-sex relationships, imposing up to 14 years of jail terms for offenders.
