Kpone-Katamanso MCE And MP Task Traditional Leaders To Support Demolitions To Tackle Perennial Flooding
They called on traditional landowners, leaders, elders, and kingmakers within the municipality to cooperate with the Assembly to enforce President John Dramani Mahama ’s directive to demolish structures on waterways to help address the perennial flooding challenge.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly, Mr Samuel Tetteh Kwarshie Morton, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Hon. Joseph Akuerteh Tettey, have successfully led a national sanitation day clean-up exercise while issuing a strong warning to the public against blocking gutters and dumping refuse into drains.
They called on traditional landowners, leaders, elders, and kingmakers within the municipality to cooperate with the Assembly to enforce President John Dramani Mahama ’s directive to demolish structures on waterways to help address the perennial flooding challenge.
Furthermore, the MCE and MP assured the public that they will enforced President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to demolish all structures built on waterways.
Both leaders made the statement while addressing journalists during the national sanitation exercise in the municipality.
President Mahama declared July 10 and 11, 2026, as National Sanitation Days following recent floods.
In response, the MCE and MP led a cleanup exercise in several communities, including Star Oil-Zenu, Katamanso Cluster of Schools Junction, Katamanso New Bridge, Down Town, Prince Spot-Kubekrom No.1, Sablah Farms, Rocky Ventures-Atadeka, Zenu Agyekwa Junction, and Gbetsile U.S.
The recent sanitation exercise saw active participation from the Member of Parliament for the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency, Council of state member, Her Excellency Cynthia Komley Adzetey, Coordinating Director of the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly, Mr. Mohammed Ali Amadu, and Presiding Member for the Assembly, Honourable George Ahengah, as well as students and national security officials.
The MCE noted that while the exercise was scheduled to run from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., it was extended to 2:00 p.m. because participants were still enthusiastically cleaning the environment.
During the exercise, he pointed out that participants actively engaged in street sweeping, weeding, and desilting primary drains and gutters.
The MCE expressed his profound gratitude to the students, Assembly staff, personnel of the national security agencies and key government officials who turned out in large numbers to clean the municipality, describing their participation as excellent.
According to him, although the exercise was primarily organized for Assembly staff, national security personnel, and corporate bodies, residents came out in their numbers to join the sanitation drive.
He highlighted that they were privileged to have a Council of State member join forces with the participants, alongside the MP, MCE, Assembly staff, and the Acting Commander of the Ghana Navy.
The MCE stressed that recent checks confirmed the recurring flooding disasters following heavy downpours were largely man-made, caused by the indiscriminate dumping of household waste into open gutters, improper building designs on waterways, and encroachment on drains.
He said President John Dramani Mahama is personally supporting the nationwide sanitation campaign, demonstrating the government's commitment to improving environmental sanitation.
According to the MCE, the recent floods exposed the effects of poor waste disposal, with many drains and gutters becoming heavily choked with refuse.
He explained that this informed the government's decision to declare July 10 and 11 as National Sanitation Days.
He stressed that sanitation should not be limited to these two days but should become a daily responsibility for every citizen.
He further announced that dredging of drains will continue as part of measures to improve water flow.
The MCE noted that structures built on waterways would be removed to help prevent future flooding.
He urged all residents to revive the ancient communal spirit and clean their surroundings without waiting to be prompted.
He also praised the school children who joined the exercise, stating that their involvement demonstrated a deep care for the environment and gives hope for sustaining these cleanup exercises among the youth.
Furthermore, the MCE urged all residents in the Kpone-Katamanso municipality to clean their frontages daily to prevent communicable diseases.
He encouraged everyone to become sanitation watchdogs, urging them to muster the courage to report offenders to national security personnel so they can be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.
The MCE disclosed that the Assembly is already prosecuting individuals who deliberately dump refuse into gutters at the Kpone-Katamanso District Court.
"For now, irrespective of who owns the parcel of land, provided it is situated on waterways or the corridors of drains, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has earmarked all these structures to be demolished very soon," the MCE stated.
