Kenyatta 'has not seen it fit to congratulate me' - Ruto

William Ruto, the incoming president of Kenya, claims that Uhuru Kenyatta did not think it appropriate to congratulate him on his victory.

"The essential thing is that I won the elections. I regret that President Kenyatta has not found it appropriate to congratulate me, but I don't mind.

He might be a little disheartened or angry because I defeated his candidate. But politics is inherently that way, "He informed CNN.

Following Mr. Ruto's tweet about his phone call with President Kenyatta, in which they discussed the general election and the changeover to a new administration, the interview was broadcast.

Gay rights are "not a significant issue" in the nation right now, according to Mr. Ruto, an evangelical Christian, who also told CNN that he will concentrate on the more urgent problems of unemployment and famine.

"We don't want to turn a molehill into a mountain. The Kenyan people do not find this to be a major problem."

Added him: "The Kenyan people will make a decision when the subject of homosexuality and the rights of LGBT persons comes up, and we will respect that decision. Now let's concentrate on the problems that concern our people."

Gay sex is illegal in Kenya under colonial-era legislation and is subject to a 14-year prison sentence. It's unclear if there have ever been any gay sex convictions in Kenya.
