Mali's omission from a West African tour is explained by the UN chief.

During this week's West African tour, UN Secretary-General António Guterres revealed why he ignored Mali.

In his annual Ramadan solidarity trips to countries, Mr. Guterres paid visits to Senegal, Niger, and Nigeria.

According to the BBC, his itinerary was designed to recognize people who were making progress in the battle against terrorism.

"This visit was a reward for those who are doing better in the fight against terrorism," Mr. Guterres said. "This was my annual solidarity visit with Ramadan, and it is a visit in solidarity with terrorist victims."

Mali boasts the UN's largest peacekeeping force, but after two recent coups, ties between its military leadership and Western countries have worsened.

Hundreds of mercenaries from Russia's Wagner group have been accused of being hired by the junta to assist in the fight against terrorist organizations.
