Lagos suspends new guidelines for safe abortions

According to the health ministry of Lagos state in Nigeria, new regulations on safe abortion have been put on hold to allow for more consultations.

The instructions on how to provide safe and legal abortion services within the bounds of current law were established over four years for the healthcare profession.

However, religious authorities claimed they weren't contacted.

The Catholic archbishop of Lagos was quoted as warning earlier this week that the rules will legalize abortion by stealth.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated on Thursday that additional public and stakeholder education was required to ensure a better grasp of the rules.

The therapeutic termination of a pregnancy is permitted by Lagos State legislation, which implies that medical practitioners may end a pregnancy when the mother's life is in danger or the fetus' chances of survival are deemed to be remote.
