Kenya fines loan app over debt shaming

An online lender was fined $3,700 (£3,400) by Kenyan authorities for allegedly violating consumer privacy and exposing that information.

It happened as a result of complaints users had made about data breaches.

According to the Office of Data Protection, it received nearly 150 complaints against Whitepath Ltd over claims that the lender's mobile app was harvesting contact information from phone users in order to engage in debt-shaming tactics.

The employees of the lender were allegedly harassing the complainants and their social connections over erroneously obtained phone contacts.

Regus Kenya, a company that leases office space, was also fined a comparable sum after being accused of emailing complainants despite requests to desist.
