After Kenya gained independence from British colonial authority in 1963, he became the country's third president. From approximately the end of 2002 till 2013, he served two terms.

Former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has been hailed by the Queen as a "great statesman" with a "lifelong record of devotion to the Kenyan people."

Mr. Kibaki died last Thursday at the age of 90, and his funeral is currently taking place at a stadium in Nairobi, Kenya's capital.

"I was sorry to receive the news of Mwai Kibaki's passing," the Queen writes in her condolence statement.

"Kenya can be proud of his leadership legacy," she said in a statement released by the British High Commission.
