President Muhammadu Buhari stated on Monday that dozens of people seized on a high-speed train in northern Nigeria are being used as human shields by their kidnappers, making rescue impossible.

Last week, photos of 62 individuals supposedly being held as hostages appeared on social media, but it's unclear when they were taken. Families of those who have gone missing said they recognized their loved ones in the photos.

"They are employing citizens as human shields, making confrontation with them harder... They are unconcerned about killing their prisoners if "Any rescue mission that ends with the death of a hostage cannot be considered a success. The administration does not want a tragedy like this to occur."

He stated that the situation has to be handled properly to "release the hostages safely, undamaged, and alive."

Kidnappings for ransom have become all too common in Nigeria.
