High demand for honey, the time to invest in Bee keeping is now: best keeper advises government

The 2013 National Best Bee Keeping Award Winner from the Oti Region of Ghana,  Nana Ankama I has appealed to the government led by  Nana Addo Dankwa Akofo Addo to consider investing in beekeeping for exportation considering its high demand on the world market.

He is optimistic investing in beekeeping will earn more income for the country just like cocoa, cashew, and other mineral resources.
“If government through the Ministry of Food Agriculture will realize the importance of investing in beekeeping, it will boost the economic benefit of exportation in the country”, he stressed.

He said, the demand for honey globally is very high and expensive hence his call. He is hopeful the same will also create employment avenues for Ghanaian youth especially those in rural communities.
“ If the youth are encouraged with capital to start with a limited year of two or three in the process of starting the farm, a huge production of honey can be achieved to meet globally whiles creating economic income for the country”, he opined.
Nana called for support from the government in terms of logistics and machinery that will help in processing the honey during the harvesting.
He said, vehicles to be carrying the bee hypes to the farms, warehouses, and other machinery to make them produce more honey are all needed to help the farmers.
Nana also touched on poor road networks in some beekeeping communities which has been hindering the smooth transportation of the honey.
again urged the government to institute beekeeping awards to make it very attractive enough to get the youth into the business.

He, therefore, pledged his support to any youth who is ready to enter into honey farming which can improve and better their lives.

Nana Ankama made this statement after a media encounter for this season's honey harvest in the Nkwanta South Municipal of the Oti Region.
Madam Hannah Werner the project Coordination  Contribute Germany honey expert on her tour to some of the farms realized that a lot needs to be done on the farms to improve the notion of honey in the area.
She also appealed to the government to invest in more of the business and urged the youth to also take advantage of the honey business seriously to improve their livelihood to overcome the youth unemployment rate in the country.
