The 3 hours of torrential rain in Tamale pulled down many houses rendering several people homeless.

The rain which started in the hours of 7am and stopped 10am on Monday, August 31, 2021 affected several homes in Tamale including Sawalni, Fuo, Sawaba, Gumani, Vitting, Lamakara and Zogbeli.

Soirreenews reporter, Abdul Sammed Gurundari visited some of the areas to ascertain the extent of the havoc caused by the rainwater, at Sawalni the houses and shops around the main drainage were all submerged in water with the affected people running out for their lives.

Some rooms were pulled down rendering victims stranded and destroying properties running into thousands of Ghana cedis.

One Mma Salamatu Adam room was pulled down by the floods engulfing all her property leaving her family with only the clothes they are wearing.

Most of the roads in these flood areas were held hostage by the waters for several hours preventing motorists passage. There is no drainage system in Sawaba, one of the affected areas allowing free flow of tense water to people’s homes.

As of 9 am on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, people in some of the affected areas cannot still access their homes because of the stagnant nature of water and the muddy nature of the ground.

The National Disaster Management Organization, NADMO has assessed the situation and warn the general public especially areas where the waters are stagnant not to risk accessing their houses and wait till the environment is accessible.

The Metropolitan NADMO Coordinator, Yussif Danjuma said “we have gone round the affected areas including officials of the Ghana Fire Service to ascertain the level of damage caused by the floods”.

Many of the victims are living with families and other neighbours and hoping to be able to access their homes. At Fuo for instance people lose their cars to the floods with such cars still stagnant in the water. The victims are yearning for support including clothing, shelter and food items.
