Heavy Downpour Destroys 45 Homes, One Dead - Upper West Region NADMO

The situational report of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has revealed that about forty-five (45) homes were destroyed in the Upper West Region, with one woman losing her life through a heavy downpour.

The Region NADMO Directorate detailing the extent of damage caused by last week heavy downpour after its assessment said in a statement that the downpour caused disarray at most communities in the region.

The statement said one person lost her life in Funsi, a farming community in the Wa Municipality.

It noted that several residents have been rendered homeless due to the situation.

On Thursday 12th and Friday 13th of August 2021, the Wa East District has been experiencing a heavy downpour of rain which lasted for about 12 hours. 

The rains started at about 23:00 GMT and lasted up to Friday Morning 13th August 2021 at about 11:50 am in the district. The heavy downpour resulted in floods that flooded a number of farmlands and buildings were also collapsed in the District with several roads affected.

Communities that were badly hit by the rains include Goripie, Holomuni, Gurunbele, Manwe, Tiniebe, Kpalwogu, Bullenga and Funsi recorded collapse rooms’ disasters as a result of heavy downpour leading to the partial collapse of forty-five (45) rooms, in the above-mentioned communities in the process rendered all the affected persons homeless.

The total number of persons affected in these disasters was three Hundred and Sixty (360) and the breakdown is as follows; male adult Seventy-three (73), female adults Eighty-five (85), male children were One Hundred and Twenty-seven (127) and Seventy-five (75) female children.

On the other hand, the District also recorded some flood farms disasters in the communities such as Chawuli, Holomuni, Talawonaa, Kulun, Gbantala, Kpalwogu, Duu, Funsi and Yayuonyiri as a result of the heavy downpour.

The total number of farms flooded was Seven Hundred and Ten (710) Acres and the breakdown is as follows; Five Hundred and sixteen (516) acres of maize and One Hundred and Twenty (120) acres of yam, fifty-one (51) acres of Cassava, Twenty (20) acres of soya beans and Three (3) acres of Okro respectively.

The total number of people affected by these disasters was Six Hundred and Seventy-one and the breakdown is as follows; male adult One Hundred and Forty-eight (148), female adult, one Hundred and Twenty-five (125).

Meanwhile, some roads were also cut off due to the downpour, for instance, the road between Yaala no 1 to Kulun road, Yayounyiri to Kulun road, Jumo to Funsi road, Belekpong road, Guo, Sahee, Janfian, Talawonaa, Dorlisa, Bulee, Holomuni, Danyuokura, Kpaanamuna, Kokoyiri and Chasee.

Unfortunately, one person lost her life in the case of the Funsi collapse rooms’ disasters.
