GJA-AGI equip Journalists in Volta and Oti with skill training in Business and Tourism Reporting

The Volta Regional Director of Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) Mr Alexander Nketia has commended journalists in the Volta and Oti Region for taking time to report on tourism in the region and said when continued, it will help to market the tourism potentials as well as put the Regions on the lamplight.

Journalists in Volta and Oti regions have been trained in Business and Tourism reporting in order to develop and promote the natural environment in the two Regions.

Being the master mouthpiece of development and propagating the economic values of the Volta and Oti region, the Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association Volta and Oti chapter, Mr Anthony Kafui Kanyi, urged journalists to develop the interest in business and economic reporting as well as Tourism by creating the ideas and figures most importantly to tell the story.

He said journalists must expose and sell out the natural resources to attract tourists from all walks of life to patronise the regions.

The Chairman made this call during a one-day Masterclass training on Business and Tourism Reporting for some selected journalists from the regions held in Ho organised by the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA and Association of Ghana Industries (AGI-Volta/Eastern/Oti) respectively on 19th August 2021.

Mr Anthony Kafui Kanyi, Chairman, GJA-Volta, indicated that business reporting demands more than finding, processing and sharing information.

Explaining this deeper, he said economics plays a critical and lasting role in society because everyone is working hard to make ends meet in business, which begins from the individual level, group and corporate Organization and the nation at large.

He encouraged journalists not to fear business reporting since it will yield results in the future.

“Do not think the stories or assignments you are writing on today are for the company you work for but they are yours?" he said.

He said some basic skills involved in reporting in the business field included observation of what is happening in the economic changes and business trends.

According to him, “It is all about figures and data, indicating what the numbers are saying since it will affect the people.”

Mr Kanyi finally advised the participants to schedule themselves if they want to engage in business reporting which can go into tourism by using the opportunity of science and technology to read both local and international stories.

The President of the Association of Ghana Industries for Volta/Eastern/Oti, Mr Dela Gadzanku, said, the two Regions, Volta and Oti are endowed with a lot of potentials when it comes to natural resources, farming, among others which need to be cherished and propagated.

He noted that there is a larger number of sweet potatoes, fish, tomatoes among others which are exported from the Volta region and must be encouraged.

He pledged the support of the Association of Ghana Industries to promote and put the Volta and Oti region on the international map.

Mr Dela Gadzanku congratulates the leadership and journalists in the region for the support and their hard work to promote the region and called on journalists to come together for a successful and common goal to be achieved.

Mr Kofi Akpabli, a renowned tourism writer and a CNN award winner, encouraged and shared his experiences in tourism reporting with participants.

He said, as a travel reporter, there is the need to provide current and accurate information of a destination based on a personal visit and experience.

He said by so doing, you are helping the reader and also selling out the potentials of the destination.

He encouraged the journalists in the region both on radio and print media to continue preaching the “Visit Volta, Experience Ghana” with the aim of advertising the potentials in the two regions.

At the end of the training, participants have presented certificates at the event.

This certificate was issued by the Volta Heritage Foundation and Ghana Tourism Authority.
