Ghana suspends police officers after a crackdown on student protests

Following Monday's skirmishes with students protesting outside their school, the Ghana Police Service has suspended three officers, including a regional commander.

After a clash with police, at least 20 students from Kumasi's Islamic Senior High School were transported to the hospital with injuries.

They were part of a group that demanded speed bumps after a series of accidents, according to local media.

"Handling of the incident was unsatisfactory and fell short of our normal operating procedure on crowd management," police stated in a statement.

After the kids bombarded them with stones, officers employed pepper spray and fired warning shots, but no one was wounded by a bullet, according to the report.

Clinical psychologists have been dispatched to the school to assist the pupils, according to the statement.

The Ghanaian police have been chastised on multiple occasions for their inadequate crowd control tactics, which frequently result in injuries and deaths.
