Donald Trump's historic indictment: What you need to know

Here is a summary of what has occurred thus far:

As he runs for the Republican nomination in 2024, Donald Trump became the first US president to be charged with a crime.

The grand jury investigation focused on a $130,000 bribe to porn actress Stormy Daniels to prevent her from disclosing a sexual encounter with Trump, although the precise charge is unknown.

Former Trump attorney and crucial witness Michael Cohen said on MSNBC that the indictment "will speak for itself."

According to his attorney, Trump is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday of the following week for his arraignment, during which he will be required to make a plea.

Trump said he doesn't anticipate a fair trial and called the indictment "political persecution."

Outside of Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where he has been staying, supporters waving US flags have congregated. The indictment was described by Sen. Lindsey Graham as "a shocking and dangerous day for the rule of law in America."
