Algeria recalls envoy to France in spat over wanted activist

In a fresh dispute over the evacuation of Algerian activist Amira Bouraoui, who is sought by Algiers, the presidency said on Wednesday that Algeria has called back its ambassador to France for consultations.

According to a statement, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered the recall of Ambassador Said Moussi "with immediate effect."

After being detained in Tunisia on Friday and facing possible deportation to Algeria, Ms. Bouraoui, 46, was eventually able to board a flight to France on Monday night, according to the AFP news agency.

The French-Algerian was given a two-year prison sentence in Algeria in May 2021 for "offending Islam" and "insulting the president." Since then, she has not been detained pending an appeal.

In August 2022, French President Emmanuel Macron paid a visit to Algeria in an effort to mend relations that had been strained due to divergent memories of Algeria's violent independence war.
