Davido, a well-known musician from Nigeria, has told his attorneys to file a lawsuit after an April Fool's joke he pulled off completely went wrong.

According to the hoax, an Afrobeats musician was detained in Kenya after cocaine was discovered on his private aircraft.

After concluding a trip of East Africa, the 31-year-old called the bogus claim "extremely irresponsible".

"I have never been arrested by anyone in any country for any crime in the world," he said on social media.

"Not my home Nigeria, my home America, or any of the hundreds of countries I've made home throughout my career," his statement on X, formerly Twitter, continued.

After being released by Kenya's K24 TV on Monday, the April Fool's joke quickly gained popularity on social media.

The Nigerian superstar claimed it caused him to get a deluge of calls after his performances to standing room only at the Timeless Concert in Kampala and Raha Fest in Nairobi.

Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) posted a screen grab of the title with "Fake News" written across it mid-morning on Monday, demonstrating the extent of the outrage.

"I want to reassure my fans that there is absolutely no truth to these rumors. "I've returned home to Nigeria after completing my scheduled shows in Kenya and Uganda with success," Davido stated on Tuesday.

"I find the fabrication of allegations of such international crimes extremely irresponsible regardless of the light of 'April Fools', and my lawyer is seeking legal recourse against the media parties responsible for generating this misinformation."

In response to Davido's decision to file a lawsuit, K24 TV has not commented.

Though some Kenyans have expressed hope that the scandal may be settled amicably on social media, many Kenyans thought the prank was unacceptable.
