President Akufo-Addo has dismissed claims that the former Auditor-General, Daniel Yao Domelevo was hounded out of office.

The President explained that, Mr Domelevo’s resignation was due to his attainment of the national retirement age of 60.

“There’s a time for retiring which is prescribed by statue not my making. If you are 60 years old you’re suppose no longer to be able to work in the public service,” he said in an interview on CNN on Monday, May 3, 2021.

On the night of March 3, the President retired the anti-graft campaigner who had just returned from a 167-day forced leave.

This move was heavily criticized by a section of the public.

These include civil society organisations who have highlighted the have highlighted its propensity to stifle the anti-corruption fight.

But  the President said “the Auditor-General, like me… should be some of the first [persons] to recognize the laws in our country.”

Akufo-Addo in the interview, also described his government's anti-corruption fight as satisfactory, adding that there is evidence to this performance.

According to him, Ghana’s improved ranking on global corruption indexes bears testament to how well his government has performed, since coming into power.
