Go and Register, Don’t be intimidated by Military Presence – Mahama

Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has urged supporters of the party in border towns of the Volta Region to participate in the ongoing voters’ registration in spite of the presence of the military,

“I have asked our members not to be intimidated and that despite the presence of the military, they should still come out in their numbers and register so that they can exercise their franchise come December 7, 2020 this year,” he said.

The NDC had earlier accused the Akufo-Addo government of using the military to deter residents in border towns of the country, particularly Volta Region, from participating in the mass voters’ registration exercise.

The NDC had alleged that the military were harassing residents in these border communities.

But the government has denied these accusations.

According to the Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul and President Nana Akufo-Addo, the troops are simply to strengthen security at the border as part of Covid-19 restrictions.

But the NDC flagbearer is not convinced. He condemned what he claims to be illegal home searches conducted by some armed officers.

Mr Mahama who visited some voters’ registration centres in the region questioned the alleged acts.

“They said they were there to find out if they are foreigners in their houses. That is not the indication we were given by the authorities. They said they were there to check entry of persons infected with Covid. And so why would you go into people’s houses now to find out if people are Ghanaian citizens or not?” he quizzed.
