5 hardened criminals facing trials at the Ashaiman Court

Five stiffened criminals are facing the fury of the Ashaiman Circuit court on criminal activities. Charged on two counts of conspiracy to commit crime namely, robbery contrary to sections 23(1) and 149 of the criminal offences Act 29, of Act 1960 and robbery contrary to section 149 of the criminal offenses Act 29 of 1960.

The court presided over by His Honour, Simon Gaga remanded the accused into police custody.

The five: 1. Issah Alhassan, 2.David Addo aka T.T. 3. Jacob Mensah aka Colombia, 4. Michael Donkor aka Akoda Baron and 5. Samuel Atsu aka Sammy pleaded not guilty on all count 1 and 2.

On their first appearance in court, they were remanded into police custody while the case was adjourned to 30/5/23.

The court ordered the Prosecutor to file a witness statement.

When the case was first called on 30/5/23, the court ordered A1 to A4 to remain in lawful custody while the case was adjourned to 13/06/23.

On 13/6/23 however, when the case was called, the Prosecutor prayed for a short adjournment to enable the filing of the witness statement while the application for bail pending trial for A2 was moved by counsel.

But His Honour Simon Gaga, having listened to the counsel for A2 praying for bail pending trial and Prosecution not opposing same, A2 was granted bail for GHS 100,000.00 with three sureties, two of which should be justified. With regards to A1, A3, A4, and A5, the court did not know their respective places of abode therefore they were made to remain in lawful custody.

The prosecution is ordered to file a witness statement before the next adjourned date of 27/6/2023 for a case management conference(CMC). When the case was called on the next hearing date, the Judge ruled that the gravity of the offense upon conviction was severe so he could not allow him to grant the accused bail while the case was adjourned to 7/7/23 for mention. Presenting the D/C/Inspector Philip Parimah investigative case, Chief Inspector C.O. Norgbedzi told the court that the complainant, Xu Ying, Anthony Owusu, and Nan Xu are employees of Sentuo Steel Ltd, manufacturers of iron rods at the Heavy Industrial Area, Tema.

A1, Issah Alhassan, A2, David Addo aka T.T. A3, Jacob Mensah aka Colombia, A4, Michael Donkor aka Akoda Baron, and A5 is Samuel Atsu aka Sammy, all of whom reside within the Ashaiman Municipality.

On 10/5/23 at about 10:00 pm, the accused persons and two others at large, some of whom were armed with Pump Action Guns, Pistols, and other offensive weapons stormed the company's premises and subjected some of the workers to beatings amidst the firing of gunshots, subdued and marched them into two offices whilst shouting at them for direction to where the monies were kept.

The workers were made to open all available drawers and bags in the offices, but they did not find the money. Chief Inspector C.O. Norgbedzi told that the accused persons then stole three Huawei mobile phones and cash to the sum of GHS 300.00 from Ku Ying, a Techno Hot 3 mobile phone from Anthony Owusu. Nan Xu also lost an iPhone 13 Promax, an iPhone 14 Promax, and a cash sum of GHS 1,200.00 to the accused persons.

Chief Inspector C.O. Norgbedzi told the court that the accused person then left the compound while shooting to death one of the drivers at a spot outside of the company near the main gate before fleeing. The deceased was later identified as a-57- year old Baba Alhassan of Ferro Fabrik Ltd, a neighboring company that also produces iron rods.

Chief Inspector C.O. Norgbedzi told the court that Police intelligence led to the arrest of the accused persons in A1's house at Katamanso, a suburb of Ashaiman in the early hours of 11/5/2023. He further told the court that a search in the room the accused persons were occupying led to the discovery of one locally made pistol, three toy pistols, 26-9mm ammunition, five 6mm ammunition, six BB cartridges, and 4 garden guns cartridges all of which A1 claimed ownership of.

Investigations revealed that the accused persons conspired and went on a robbery spree attacking residents of a house at Katamanso and robbing them of their money and valuables that same night. He told the court that the case was still under investigation.
